Does ChatGPT Use Reddit?
Yes, and I can show you without quoting anyone's opinion. On 20 October 2026 I ran 25 everyday questions through ChatGPT search and Grok, 50 answers in total. None of the questions mentioned Reddit. Five of those answers still cited a thread from one of the subreddits I moderate.
That is a small sample from one day, and I'll be careful not to stretch it. But it answers the basic question. ChatGPT does pull Reddit threads into answers, and it does it when the person asking never typed the word.
The bigger picture agrees. Peec AI analysed 30 million US citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews in March 2026 and found Reddit was the most cited domain overall. Reddit itself reported 514.6 million weekly active uniques and 130.3 million daily active uniques in Q2 2026, so there is a lot of fresh human conversation for an answer engine to read.
So the real questions are how it gets there, how a thread gets picked, and what you can do about it without breaking anything. That is the rest of this guide.
What The OpenAI And Reddit Partnership Covers
In May 2024, OpenAI and Reddit announced a partnership. According to OpenAI's own announcement, it gives OpenAI access to Reddit's Data API, so ChatGPT and OpenAI's other products can surface Reddit content, particularly on recent topics. In the other direction, Reddit gets to build AI-powered features for its users and moderators on OpenAI's models, and OpenAI became a Reddit advertising partner. The announcement also discloses that Sam Altman is a shareholder in Reddit.
Read that closely, because people stretch it. The announcement describes access to Reddit content through an API, with the stated aim of showing Reddit content in OpenAI's products. It does not promise that any particular subreddit, brand or thread will be shown. It is a pipe, not a guarantee of placement.
What People Assume
- Reddit pays for ChatGPT to love it
- Any popular thread gets cited
- Posting there guarantees a mention
What OpenAI Says
- OpenAI gets Data API access to Reddit content
- The aim is to surface Reddit content, especially on recent topics
- Reddit builds features on OpenAI models
Two things follow. First, the "recent topics" wording matters. A live conversation from this month is more useful to a search product than a three-year-old post, which fits what I wrote in the Reddit SEO ranking factors guide about freshness coming from ongoing comments. Second, the deal is one of several. Google also licensed Reddit data in February 2024, in a deal reported at about $60 million a year. Reddit sells its conversations to more than one AI company, which tells you how the market values them.
How Does ChatGPT Search Cite Reddit Threads?
When ChatGPT answers with web search on, it shows citations. Per OpenAI's help center, responses that use web search may include citations, and selecting one opens its source. Selecting Sources, when available, shows the cited sources and other relevant links. OpenAI also warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, which is worth remembering every time you read a screenshot of an AI answer.
What does that look like for Reddit? In my tracker, the Reddit citations came on questions of the kind people ask each other ("Ecuador travel advice from people who have been"), which is where first-person answers live. The citation points to a specific thread, not to the subreddit's front page. That detail is the whole game: the unit that gets cited is one thread with one clear subject.
Is ChatGPT Reading Reddit Live Or From Memory?
Two different things can happen, and people mix them up. A model can have absorbed Reddit text during training, which shapes how it talks about a topic but gives no link. Search is different: the product fetches pages at question time and cites them. The citations you can click and check come from the second path. Everything I measure on this site is the second path, because it is the only one you can observe and the only one with a source you can open.
OpenAI's help center also says that for a site to be eligible for ChatGPT search, OAI-SearchBot has to be allowed to crawl it, and placement is not guaranteed. For a brand that means the Reddit side of this is out of your hands. You cannot edit reddit.com's crawler rules. What you control is whether a thread worth citing exists.
What Did My AI Visibility Tracker See?
I built a tracker because I was tired of guessing. It runs a fixed list of everyday questions through AI engines on a schedule and logs every source. The 20 October 2026 run used 25 questions through ChatGPT search (gpt-5.4-mini with web search) and through Grok. No question contained the word Reddit.
Five answers out of 50 cited a thread from my own subreddits:
- ChatGPT, "Ecuador travel advice from people who have been": cited a thread from r/TravelEcuador.
- ChatGPT, "Where do Canadians talk about crypto investing?": cited r/OCryptoCanada.
- Grok, "Peru travel tips from people who have been": cited r/GoingToPeru.
- Grok, the same Ecuador question: cited r/TravelEcuador and r/galapagostourism.
Look at the phrasing of the questions that worked. "From people who have been." "Where do Canadians talk about." They ask for lived experience or for a community. An engine looking for that kind of answer goes where people actually talk. Questions like "best crypto exchange" or "what is the cheapest cruise" I would expect to pull more comparison sites, though I did not test that. I did not pretend otherwise: the questions where my threads appeared are the ones where a community is the right source.
My takeThe lesson is not "post more". The engines found threads where the question had already been answered by several people, in subreddits with real discussion in them.
What This Does Not Prove
The limits. It is 50 answers on one day, from two engines, on questions I chose. I did not include Perplexity or Google AI Overviews in this run (I cover those in the Perplexity guide and the AI Overviews guide). Citations move around from run to run. A tracker like this is for direction, and the number that matters is how it trends month after month, not any single snapshot. If you want that tracking done against your own brand questions, it is part of byOG's AI visibility work, where 25 tracked questions are logged every month.
What Makes A Reddit Thread Citable?
I can't see inside OpenAI's ranking, and nobody outside should claim to. What I can do is describe what the cited threads in my tracker have in common, and flag which parts are observation and which are theory.
It Answers One Question Clearly
The threads that got cited were about one thing. A planning thread on a specific country, a "where do people discuss this" thread for a specific group. A rambling thread that covers six topics gives an engine nothing clean to quote. Titles written the way a person would ask for help also match how people phrase prompts, which is the same pattern I see in Google rankings.
It Has Several Real Voices
An answer from a single account reads like an opinion. A thread where several different people add details, disagree and correct each other reads like evidence. That is also the shape engines seem to prefer when a question starts with "from people who have".
It Sits In A Subreddit That Looks Alive
My cited threads came from subreddits I moderate, each with a clear focus and new comments coming in. This lines up with what I described for Google in the ranking factors guide, and I treat it as the same underlying signal: a place with real, ongoing human activity. My theory, labelled as a theory, is that engines inherit Google's and Reddit's own judgement of which communities are legitimate. I have no proof of that.
It Is Not Stuffed With Links Or Pitches
Threads that read like an ad do not get cited as an answer to a normal question. Brand names mentioned in discussion, with a disclosed account answering with specifics, is the pattern I'd copy. I cover the disclosure side in the brand account guide.
Fake accounts, bought upvotes and invented customer stories are out. I tested the vote-buying shortcut myself in 2023 and the comments were hidden from everyone but me. Reddit's own data is what these companies pay for, and manipulated data is worth nothing to them. byOG does none of it for anyone.
What Should A Brand Do With This?
Start by measuring. Write down 20 to 25 questions your buyers really ask, the kind that never include your brand name. Run them through ChatGPT search, and log which sources show up. If Reddit threads appear and you are absent from them, you have a gap you can see. If nobody cites a thread at all, there is room to be the first useful one.
- Log 25 buyer questions monthly and record every cited source, not just your own
- Find the threads that already get cited and read what the comments say about your category
- Answer open questions in those threads under a disclosed brand account, with specifics
- Build a focused subreddit if no good community exists for your topic (see how to grow a subreddit)
- Keep moderating daily, because a dead subreddit stops looking useful
- Track the trend over months, not one run
The patient version of this is slow, which is why building a brand subreddit is a six-month commitment in my work and not a two-week sprint. Anyone promising a ChatGPT mention by next Friday is selling something I would not put my name on.
Questions About ChatGPT And Reddit
Does ChatGPT use Reddit?
Yes. OpenAI announced a partnership with Reddit in May 2024 that gives it access to Reddit's Data API so its products can surface Reddit content, and in my 20 October 2026 tracker run 5 of 50 answers cited a thread from my subreddits without the question mentioning Reddit.
Does ChatGPT cite Reddit threads?
It can. ChatGPT search shows inline citations and a Sources panel, and in my tracker the Reddit citations came on questions that asked for first-person experience or a community. OpenAI notes that citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, so check them.
Can I make ChatGPT mention my brand through Reddit?
You cannot force it. You can make sure a useful, clearly titled thread exists in a living subreddit, with real people discussing your category. That is what the cited threads I track have in common.
Is the OpenAI and Reddit partnership why Reddit shows up?
It is part of it. The announcement says OpenAI gets Data API access so it can surface Reddit content, but it does not guarantee any thread or brand a place in answers.
How do I check whether ChatGPT cites Reddit for my topic?
Write the questions your buyers ask without your brand name, run them through ChatGPT with search on, and open the Sources panel for each answer. Repeat monthly and log the results.
