What Is Reddit Answers?
Reddit Answers is Reddit's own AI-powered search. Reddit's help center now files it as Reddit's AI search (the old Reddit Answers help link redirects there), and describes it as a way to get answers, perspectives and recommendations from all of Reddit, built by summarizing real posts and comments. Each response includes in-line citations that link to the original comment or post, along with a list of communities where you can find more.
The easiest way to picture it: you type a question the way you'd ask a friend ("what's the best beginner smoker for a small yard?"), and instead of a list of threads you get a written summary with links back to the threads and comments it drew from. It is the same idea as an answer engine on the open web, but the library is limited to Reddit.
I care about this one for two reasons. It is a new front door to Reddit's content, and it is built by the company that owns the content. So it is as close as you can get to seeing how Reddit itself thinks about which comments answer which question. And the search volume says people are curious: the phrase "reddit answers" is searched around 2,900 times a month in the US, according to the keyword research I ran for this site in October 2026.
How Do You Use Reddit Answers?
Per the help center, you use the search bar on Reddit, type your question and select Ask. A few details from the same page that are easy to miss:
- Languages. It is available worldwide in English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, French or German.
- Question limits. Logged-out redditors can ask up to 10 questions per week and logged-in redditors up to 50 per day. Reddit says Premium subscribers can ask up to 100 per day. The article says these limits are subject to change.
- Sharing. You can share a response with the share button, or copy a link and share it manually. Reddit says your username is not attached to the shared link.
The skill is in the question. Narrow, specific questions with real context get the best summaries, the same way narrow, specific thread titles win in Google. "Which hostels in Cusco are good for solo travelers who want a quiet room" will pull better material than "best hostels". Then do what the citations are there for: open them. The summary is a map, and the comments are the territory.
A Quick Routine
- Ask the question the way a buyer would phrase it.
- Skim the summary for the claims that matter to you.
- Click each citation and read the comment in its thread.
- Note which subreddits keep appearing.
- Try a follow-up with a different angle and compare the sources.
How Is Reddit Answers Different From ChatGPT Or Perplexity?
The difference is the library. Reddit's help center describes Answers as summarizing posts and comments from Reddit. By contrast, ChatGPT search and Perplexity search the wider web and cite whatever pages fit, Reddit threads among them.
General Answer Engines
- Search the open web
- Cite news, brands, forums and Reddit
- Reddit threads compete with every other site
Reddit Answers
- Summarizes Reddit posts and comments
- Cites the original comment or post
- Only Reddit voices can appear
That makes Answers the cleanest test of a Reddit presence. If you have none, you can't show up there at all, and no amount of website work will change it. In a general engine you might be cited from a blog post or a directory. In Answers, the only way in is a thread or comment on Reddit.
It also means the competitive set is different. In ChatGPT you're up against every comparison site on the internet. In Answers you're up against what other redditors have said about you and your competitors. For a young brand, that can be an easier field to win, because a small number of high-quality comments can shape a summary.
How Accurate Is Reddit Answers?
Reddit is upfront about this. The same help article says generative AI may not always accurately summarize content, and that the information presented comes from redditor posts and comments and hasn't been vetted or endorsed by Reddit. It advises double-checking information on important topics like legal, medical and financial decisions.
That is a more modest claim than most AI products make, and I'd take it at face value. Two things follow for anyone using Answers to research a market.
The source quality is the thread quality. If the cited comments are thoughtful and specific, the summary will usually be a fair sketch of them. If they are jokes, rants or promo, the summary inherits that. Reddit says it doesn't vet them.
The summary flattens disagreement. Reddit threads are full of people arguing. A summary compresses that into one paragraph, and the disagreement can disappear. The citation is where you find it again.
My takeTreat Reddit Answers like a smart research assistant who has read a lot of threads but doesn't know which commenters are experts. Good for orientation. Never the last word.
What Should You Watch Out For When Researching With It?
If you use Answers for market research, a few habits keep it honest.
Watch The Sample
Redditors are not a random sample of your buyers. Subreddits skew toward people who like to discuss, compare and complain. That's useful if your product is bought after research and less useful if it's an impulse purchase. Reddit and WPP research on 13,000+ users found that 77% visit two or more communities to validate a purchase, which suggests the research habit is real, but it still describes Reddit's users and not everyone.
Watch For Old Comments
Answers cites the original comment, and you can read its date when you open it. Prices, features and policies change. A glowing 2022 comment about a product that has since changed hands tells you little.
Watch For Promotion
Some comments in any thread are marketing in disguise. Reddit says the information in Answers hasn't been vetted, so spotting disguised promotion is your job. Read the commenter's history before you trust the recommendation. If you spot a brand account pretending to be a customer, remember it, because you're about to see the same thing from the other side when you decide how your own brand shows up.
The cleanest approach is the one I would follow: use Answers to generate leads and hypotheses, then verify in the threads, then verify again outside Reddit when money or health is involved. Reddit's own warning about legal, medical and financial decisions points the same direction.
What Does Reddit Answers Mean For Brands?
This section is my reading, not Reddit's. Reddit's help article describes how Answers works for users and doesn't describe anything specific to brands, so I'm drawing conclusions from the mechanics it does describe: summaries of posts and comments, with citations to the original comment or post.
The Comment Becomes The Unit
Because citations link to specific comments, a single useful reply can be what gets surfaced and linked, not just the post it sits under. For a brand, that makes a specific, well-written answer in an existing thread worth more than another promotional post. It is also another argument for the discipline I describe in the subreddit growth playbook: reply properly, keep threads alive.
What People Say About You Is Now Searchable In Plain Language
A buyer can ask Answers "is [your brand] worth it?" and get a summary built from every comment that mentions you. You can run that question yourself today. Try it for your brand, your top three competitors and your category. The result is a free snapshot of your Reddit reputation, in the words Reddit's own tool chooses. If it's uncomfortable, the fix is the same as ever: show up under a disclosed account, answer with facts, and fix the problem if the problem is real. See byOG's reputation management work for how I approach that.
Treat It As A Fourth Answer Engine
Answers sits next to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google. I've written about how those cite Reddit in how ChatGPT uses Reddit, does Perplexity cite Reddit and Google AI Overviews and Reddit. When you log your 25 buyer questions each month, add Answers to the list of places you check. It's the one engine whose source library is entirely Reddit, which makes it the cleanest test of whether your Reddit presence exists at all. Tracking exactly this is part of byOG's AI visibility service.
Do not try to game Answers with fake accounts, bought votes or planted comments. Reddit's tool reads what real people wrote, Reddit controls what counts, and a brand caught manipulating the thread that Answers cites gets exposed in the same thread. I covered what happened when I tried vote-buying in 2023 in the ranking factors guide. The comments were hidden from everyone but me.
How Do You Test Your Brand In Reddit Answers?
- Ask "is [brand] worth it?" and "[brand] vs [competitor]" and read the summary
- Open every citation and read the comment in its thread
- Ask three category questions without your brand name and see who gets named
- Log the subreddits that recur
- Check the dates on cited comments for anything outdated
- Reply, under a disclosed account, where you can add facts
- Repeat monthly, in the same wording, and keep the log
If you notice the same handful of threads carrying your reputation, put your effort there first. And if no thread exists for a question buyers clearly ask, that's the case for building a subreddit where that question has a home. Reddit Pro's Trends tool, covered in the Reddit Pro guide, is a free way to find those unanswered conversations.
